It's a yerd thing

Every year the Yearbook & Journalism class takes a field trip to Jostens in State College to design the front cover of the yearbook and talk about the design for the inside of the book. The company is always very welcoming and the students look forward to this trip every year.

Not many people are aware of how much time and effort goes into designing the yearbook. The students put in countless hours making sure the book is just right. With many students in the class this year, there are lots of opinions going back in forth. The 2013-14 book will definitely be something to check out and will be something you have never seen before!

A step closer to playoffs

Tonight, the lady lancers soccer team achieved yet another win. The JV played at 5:30 and Varsity played under the lights at 7. With home filed advantage, the ladies came with their A-game and landed another win.

With starter Alonna Soars on the sidelines due to an injury, it was hard to adjust to the first few games without her near them, but when the ladies went out, they knew their opponent, Central Mountain, would not hold back. So the players went out and gave it their all. Their hard work payed off with a win and on step closer to playoffs. Good work, ladies!

See you at the Pole

Students and teachers of Loyalsock High School gather around the flag pole for See you at
the Pole.

On September 25, students and teachers gather early in the morning for the Christian club event, See you at the Pole. The event took place at seven am by the flag pole outsider of the main high school entrance.

See you at the Pole has become a yearly tradition here at Loyalsock.  Organizing this event was senior Abigail Yates. She says, "This was our biggest outcome yet to date. A total of 71 people came out today."  Abigail hope that this tradition continues to grow once she graduates and passes the torch down to an underclassmen.

Helping the turnout was all the additional advertisement the Christian club did prior to the event. Many signs were hung throughout the school and special shirts were available for purchase. These shirts were worn by the student body the day before the event.

A special night for Loyalsock men's soccer

Sophomore Matthew C. gets his pre-game warmup as he knows tonight's game is a big event.
With the stadium lights slowly turning on to light up the field, the Lancer soccer team gets on the field as they prepare to light up the scoreboard. The game against Hughesville is an important one, as it sends a message to the league and puts the team one step closer to playoffs. Warm-up goes by quickly, and as the sun begins to set, the tone gets serious. The Lancers clearly intend to win this home game and continue their five game winning streak.
Coach Andrew Zimmerman gives a quick speach to the team. "Come on strong and win the 50/50 balls. We have got to send a message to the league on who the top team really is," and with that the Lancers take the field.
Within the first five minutes, senior Mark O. has scored and the home team takes the lead, followed by another goal from junior Josiah C. The Spartans respond by taking a goal for themselves, reminding everyone that they will not give up easily. However the Lancers remain in control and maintain their teamwork. Each of them know who the better team is, and that they must continue to fight until the very end of the game. Junior Matt H. then takes control on a fast break and puts away an easy unassisted goal. Josiah C. then responds with another goal, putting the Lancers ahead by three. Hughesville gets a break and scores off a penalty kick, bringing them a step closer to equalizing the game. However, Matt H. has different plans for the game. He goes on to score two more goals, earning a hat trick. The soccer team bench and fans erupt in cheers and chants, shouting "Fifty, Fifty, Fifty!" On Matt's final breakaway goal marked his 50th career goal for the men's soccer team, a remarkable achievment. Matt comes of the field accompanied with cheers from friends and family alike, and claims the game ball as a trophy for his achievement. The Lancers maintain the game and go on to win 6-2.
Today's victory was special in many ways. It sent a message to the local schools that Loyalsock's mens soccer is not to be taken lightly. It puts the team one step closer to playoffs and the fabled district championship, a title that has eluded the team thus far. And finally the game put Matt H. at the fifty goal mark. This left team, the coach, and the fans ecstatic. When asked about how he feels, Matt responds that, "Today might be one of the happiest days in my life."
Tonight's game was a great sign of the soccer teams strength and accomplishment. But how will the team proceed? Only time will tell, but if tonights game was any indication of the future, the Men's soccer team has a lot to look forward to.

Congratulations to Loyalsock Men's Soccer on the victory, and congratulations to Matt H. for his achievements.

A little piece of Japan

Usually during fourth block students are so tired after a long day that they just want to go home as soon as possible. Not today, however, and not in the AP Art History Class. Not only the students were learning about Japanese art this Monday, but they also got a little traditional snack.
AP Art History covers a huge amount of art - from prehistoric and ancient to modern. Because of the massive content, there is not a lot of time to be spent at some of the topics. However, it does not mean that the class is going so fast that it becomes boring. Quite the opposite, it's a lot of fun! As example, today we have started the Japanese art and architecture. Instead of teaching the lesson in a routine way, Mr. Kaplan came up with an idea of how to make us feel almost like in Japan. He wrote some of Japanese words with English transcription on the board, and we were supposed to use them during class. He even gave each of us Pocky, a Japanese snack! He said it is very popular in Japan, and it really became a traditional food there. What a great way to learn traditions of another country!
Lessons like today's really make the learning process more interesting. After all, what can be better than a little traditional snack at the end of the fourth block?..

See You At the Pole!

Above is Senior Abigail Y. and Christian Club Advisor Mrs. June
Fall has come around again; it's time for football games, raking leaves, sweatshirts and hot chocolate; and of course, bringing in the new school year.  Some will stress, some will grow, and others will pray.  Christian Club has organized yet another yearly See You At the Pole, a time during which students and school faculty gather around the flag pole outside of the high school and spend time in prayer for not only the future of the school, but for the future of our nation.  Though the event is organized by Christian Club, any student is welcome to attend.  The gathering begins at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, September 25.

See You At the Pole is the Christian Club's first event of this school year, but it is not the only thing they do.  At their meetings, they pray for students, faculty and our country.  Outside of their meetings, the club helps perform acts of kindness.  The club's president, Abigail Y., believes that it is their job as students to take a stand for what is right.  She also stated that if someone needs help, Christian Club will be there.  To join Christian Club, talk to Abigail Y. or Mrs. June.

The new guy on campus

"Ask any Education major and they will tell you it is very tough to get a job right out of college. It is an even more difficult task for a music education major. That is why I feel so incredibly lucky to get the job as a music teacher and band director here at Loyalsock Township High School!" said a very happy and excited, Mr. Ryan Bulgarelli.

As a Penn State Alumnus and member of the "Blue Band," Mr. Bulgarelli brings his experience and enthusiasm to the Loyalsock music program. "I absolutely use my experiences with the Blue Band for our marching band here at Loyalsock. It is what I know so of course I am going to incorporate it into our program."
Mr. Bulgarelli appreciates his high school students, their eagerness to learn and their willingness to improve. He enjoys the local community and feels that is is a great place to live and work. He specifically mentioned not only how much the students are willing work but the Band Booster Parents as well. From fund raising to transportation, they help support the band in anything they do.

Double overtime

Wow, double overtime! The soccer team went into double overtime in a big game against Southern Columbia, they tied the game with a score of 1-1. But I think the students that attended th game really helped ease the minds of the girls.
Yesterday afternoon the Loyalsock high school had a pep rally just for the soccer teams. They played to try to win for Bailey and Alonna won are out with leg injuries. The girls did a really good job tonight; keep going strong girls.

Spotlight on soccer

All eyes were on the boys' soccer team today during their game against Warrior Run. The game began at 4:30 pm on home turf.

The boys faced their long-time rivals in an intense game that left a couple players injured and several coaches hoarse. Connor M., one of the injured players, cheered on from the sidelines during the second half. The final score came out to be 2-1 with our Lancers on top. Matt H. and Josiah C. scored the two goals. Overall, the boys played a clean game with great plays.

A pep-rally in honor of the boys' and girls' soccer teams also took place earlier today. The whole school joined together to wish the two teams good luck.

Feliz Cumpleaños on Friday the thirteenth

Friday the 13th is classically known to be an unlucky day,but not this one. On this day of September 13th our very own Spanish teacher was born, and the day was all but unlucky. This teacher  shows that not all is bad on  Friday the thirteenth.
Ms. Leid otherwise known as Señorita shared her birthday with her students on Friday. Her birthday shared with the famous date of bad luck and misfortune, was all but that. Students from all grades in both the middle school and high school ran to greet her with a wish of a promising birthday after school. She  played music and danced outside her room while accepting hugs from her students.
Although her birthday has passed, be sure to wish her a belated birthday the next time you see her. She still accepts the birthday wishes.

Señorita happily sharing her birthday with her students.

New Year, New Leaders

Today was an exciting day for the Junior class of 2015! Class adviser, Dana Williams, sent out ballots containing nominees for class officers for the 2013-14 school year. The positions that are up-for-grabs are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and historian.

Interestingly, the only position that had any competition was president. The nominations for this position were Brennan H. and Kaden S. The other positions only had one person running for them, which means that Lydia H. won vice president, Makenna W. won the secretary position, Nikhil S. secured the treasurer position, and Gianna R. took the prize for historian. These people are all nominated and elected in order to create a good, well-balanced body that's role doubles as class officers and school representatives. The class is doing a fantastic job at working together and creating a solid, unified group.

The election results will hopefully be released on Tuesday, September 17. Good luck to the nominees!

Carbon soufflé

It's mid-week here at Loyalsock; the time of the week where most students are bored by their classes, and would do anything to get out and have some fun. However, that didn't apply to Mr. Peterman's first block I.P.S. class this morning.
Peterman, in an attempt to liven up his lecture, showed his students an experiment they would never forget. He began with simple cup of sucrose (sugar) and slowly began to pour a vile of concentrated sulfuric acid. As he mixed the two, the simple cup of sugar began to darken in color. It began to turn coal black, and became so hot to the touch that Mr. Peterman could no longer hold it in his hands. Suddenly, gasps sounded throughout the students as the mixture exploded, erupting over the top of the cup and emitting a puff of steam.
Mr. Peterman then explained to the class that he had pulled the carbon out of the sucrose. One student  raised her hand and asked, "How did you REMOVE carbon by ADDING something?" Mr. Peterman smirked; "That's chemistry," he responded.

United We Stand

Tragedy struck in America twelve years ago today, where thousands of people lost their lives. It was a time of despair as many mourned over lost loved ones.

We began our day like any other with the morning announcements. Following which, we devote a moment of silence to those who lost their lives the eleventh of September in 2001. Every year we perform this small token of remembrance and affection for the victims of 9/11, every student and staff member included. Not only does Loyalsock Township School District participate, but countless schools across the nation.

September 11, 2001, will be a day in history that will never be forgotten.

To the Finish Line

Today, Loyalsock went up against Mt.Carmel in Cross Country. Three other schools were also involved in the meet.

Freshman, Tara H. ran her first race as a member of the team. She's liking the new experience so far.
Although the team only has nine people, everyone gets along and acts like a team.

The course at Mt.Carmel was very hilly and the runners ran in temperatures up to 90 degrees farenheight. But every runner crossed the finish line.

The season is still early, but these athletes run every race like it's their last!

Geography Spanish style

Spanish II students sitting on the chairs with the flag corresponding with their slip of paper.

Señorita Leid gets her Spanish kids up and moving. There is no assigned seats and tables for her first block.

Each day, Señorita Leid's Spanish II students pick up a slip of paper with a Latin American country on it. The students then have to find the table that matches, or the seat with the country's flag. This incorporates geography into the daily lesson, along with forcing the kids to sit with new people each day.

Señorita is always looking for new and creative ways to get her students to use their brains. The mini geography lesson is just one of the many tricks that Miss Leid has up her sleeve.

Showing off our school spirit

The flaggers smile for the camera showing off our school colors at the beginning of the pep rally! All ready to go for the football game against Danville. The boys soccer team also has a game tonight against East Juniata.

The cheerleaders and the band organized the pep rally and got everyone hyped up! They really got the fall sport season off to a great start.

Hopefully the excitement at the pep rally comes through at the games tonight! "It's going to be a war out there but we are ready to fight." -Mr. VanFleet

Back in the lab

Hannah Bower (11) works on her Honors Chemistry lab in Mr. Conner's class.

As the second week of school at Loyalsock Township High School is coming to an end, students are back to the learning environment, and also back to labs in science class.

Students in the Honors Chemistry class with Mr. Todd Conner are putting their newly learned skills to the test. Students were given eight different writing utensils that they would test to see what colors they were made from. Once they test all eight pens, they were given a paper with five randomly selected pens and were to distinguish which five of the eight pens were used.

Mr. Conner explains that this testing "was used during a murder case years ago in which they discovered the pen that was used to write a letter which was later used as evidence from the crime scene."

Fresh start

The boys' soccer team started their first home game of the season at 7 pm on the turf field facing their biggest opponent, Montoursville. They hoped to start the season off with a big bang and leave high expectations for their following game.

This game kept the fans cheering and on the edge of their seats. With a goal from Michael P., the boys just fell short of a win. Montoursville took home the game 2-1. Although they may have lost, the boys gave it all they had and kept their heads held high.

Come out to support the Lancer's at their next game on Thursday at 7pm at home on the turf against Jersey Shore!

New year, new lockers

Trisha C. moves into her new locker on the second day of school.

Over the summer, custodians have diligently worked to change all locker combinations in the high school.  In addition, students also received new lockers.  During the first official day of school, August 29, 2013, students showed mixed emotions about the change in scenery.

Principal, Dr. Reitz explained the reasoning behind the change was to keep past students that visit the school out of their old lockers. Also, with the new iPads, changing the locks adds more security to the valuables that every student now holds. However, students such as Trisha C. find the locker change as a "huge inconvenience, especially for us seniors."

The majority of senior's lockers can be found in the H locker wing, while most freshman locker's are located in the B wing. According to students, the B wing lockers are in the best location in the high school.
